ELIMU EDUCATION MAISHA MTAANI EXHIBITION

Life in slums is a major challenge to the youth who dwell in it. Every morning when one wakes up he or she is obliged to various duties that one has to perform to end a day successfully hence some risks must also be taken .For instance, most slums do not have proper sanitation, good education system, and mostly lack of security and this leads to most youths falling victims of the challenges they face. Gender sensitivity is also a major challenge because the society that dwells in the slums does not value the future of boy/girl child. Boys become victims of social crimes such as robbery, drug abuse and these results to the dropping out of school. Girls on the other hand involve in premarital sex that result to teenage pregnancy due to lack of awareness in the society.
To successfully curb the menace the youths seriously require stable and reliable education system as well as serious sensitization in the slum areas. Empowerment through education will enable them to understand their rights both social and political and to become responsible people in the society. Through education they can acquire the knowledge and skills to perform various duties hence become self-reliant and through this, it will reduce the rate of criminal activities in the slums.
Goretty and Clinton who are students from Mathare slums and also being given scholarship in high school by Razem pamoja Foundation decided to work together with local artists to share their stories and challenges that they undergo through art and story telling. They believe that this exhibition will give them the opportunity to open up the minds of entire community and also benefit them.
